Travelling overseas with a disability – by Natasha Astill

I had the opportunity to travel with my partner for the first time overseas. We travel to Gold Coast for a music festival.
We had planned this trip last year. Back in November. We did some of the planning by ourselves but needed some assistance.
We got through security/border control on the departing airport smoothly and quickly. Unfortunately there was delays in departing. We were able to get pre-board.
When we arrived at Gold Coast Airport the passport control person was super helpful and so was the baggage collection security person.
When we went through security/border control at Gold Coast, we had to declare something. Then we were randomly selected for a bag search where they went through every inch of our bag. Including checking our medicine.
Once we got through there, we had to locate our shuttle. We had to go in the next available one as our flight was delayed.
We got to our hotel and then it started exploring Gold Coast and then located where our music festival was that we were attending the next day.
We had a fantastic time at the festival. I brought along my earmuffs.
The following day we went to Sea world. And we saw the awesome dolphin show. We left a bit earlier than we expected as it was pouring down with rain and we didn’t want to get caught in the rain.
On the morning of our departure back to NZ. We got notified by the airline that our flight was going to be delayed two hours and 35 minutes. The following hour after we were notified we got alerted by the airline that our flight was cancelled. So we went to the airport and talked to the airline counter to see if there was any available flights for that day. There was a flight available in Brisbane. The airline was providing a bus transportation to Brisbane airport. We were able to get onto that flight in pleased to say that we got home safely.
I do want to mention that with all the delays in getting back home we did need some help with what to do in this situation as it was a new experience.
For those who are wanting to travel to a new place With someone that they haven’t travelled before with, I suggest that you have an action plan ready for when unexpected situations occur.
